Know your wheelchair before you purchase it
January 11th, 2009Mobility problems may be due to disability, illness or even old age. This is when you will feel the need for a wheelchair to deal with your mobility problems. Wheelchairs are available in a huge range, each with different features to suit your needs. This may make it difficult for you to choose the right wheelchair for yourself, especially if you do not have any prior knowledge about the chair.
Before purchasing a wheelchair, make sure that you consult a professional or a therapist so that you know what your needs are. If you are strong enough to control and push your wheelchair forward, you can choose a self-propelled wheelchair. If you require an attendant, then there are specific wheelchairs available which are propelled by someone else besides the user. Electric wheelchairs are also available for those who are not strong enough to handle their own wheelchairs, but who still want to maintain their freedom. Electric wheelchairs move ahead with the help of a motor and are controlled and manoeuvred with the help of a joystick.
The height, support and seat of a wheelchair also play an important role, as they determine your level of comfort. Make sure that your wheelchair will be easy to move around in the various halls and passages of your home or the places that you frequently visit. Check the weight of your wheelchair along with its foldable features, especially if you will be travelling with it frequently.
